Green Spaces for All: Why Everyone Deserves Green Spaces

Urbanisation has brought many benefits, but it has also resulted in significant challenges, particularly in terms of access to green spaces.

More than half of the world’s population now lives in cities,  and it is estimated that 68% of the global population will be living in cities by 2050. This trend has made it difficult for residents to connect with nature, which can have a profound impact on their health and well-being.

Green spaces, such as parks, trees, and gardens, provide not only beauty but also a range of health benefits, particularly for children and the elderly. According to an article from the European Environment Agency, physical and mental development is enhanced for children who live, play, and learn in green environments. They similarly report that visiting green spaces can lead to improved physical health and social well-being for the elderly. The article found that being in proximity to nature can also lead to enhanced immune functioning, superior relaxation and restoration, and improved cognitive functioning.

By taking action to reduce the inequalities of green space access, we can maximise the health benefits of being close to nature. While everyone can benefit from access to green spaces, this is especially true to those who are at risk. Access and quality vary in different areas within cities, with less green space typically found in underserved communities.

Montreal is a beautiful city with a rich history and culture, but it is not without its challenges when it comes to accessing green space. With the vast majority of the population living in apartments, the largest obstacle reported to gardening is a lack of space. Although there are over 70 community gardens in the city, wait times can be as long as 7 years. Moreover, due to the limited amount of publicly available land, Montreal is struggling to open more community gardens.

At Cultiville, we believe that everyone deserves access to green spaces. We are dedicated to connecting individuals who have unused green space with those who want to garden by providing an online garden marketplace for the whole city.

By joining Cultville, you can experience the many benefits of green spaces, even if you live in an apartment or do not have access to your own garden. We are committed to our mission to make green spaces accessible to everyone, for the health of ourselves, our families, our environment, and our community. Stay tuned for updates on our progress!
