Renting out garden spaces has become a great way to offer homeowners a unique opportunity to earn passive income and contribute to their community’s access to green spaces. At Cultiville, we’re dedicated to connecting homeowners with renters, and want to help by providing a seamless experience for everyone involved.
Overview of garden-sharing and Cultiville
Before we get into the benefits and challenges of using Cultiville to share your garden space, let’s go back to where it all began. Our mission and values guide how the platform works for both homeowners and garden renters. If you share these values, Cultiville could be a great way for you to earn extra income with minimal effort by renting out a part of your yard.
Cultiville started in Montreal when we and our friends struggled to find garden spaces. After having a great summer sharing the garden-space with others in our community, we wanted everyone to easily be able to experience the joy that season gave us! So, we created a platform to connect gardeners with homeowners. Today, Cultiville aims to make it easy for everyone to access green spaces and enjoy gardening.
The platform focuses on convenience and genuine experiences. It welcomes gardeners of all levels, ensuring they feel safe and welcome. For garden owners, Cultiville provides a simple online booking system to rent out their backyard spaces. You can set your rates and rules without long-term commitments.
Cultiville also offers features like verified profiles and instant messaging to make managing your garden space easier and safer.
Thinking about renting out your garden? Answer these questions to see if you’re a good fit:

- Do you have an unused space that’s at least the size of a parking spot?
- Are you patient and willing to deal with any potential problems that come up?
- Do you like meeting new people?
- Do you want to help your community by sharing your garden?
Benefits of Renting Your Backyard
Low-effort income: Renting out your unused garden space can provide a source of passive income without requiring significant ongoing effort from you. Cultiville makes it easy by letting you list multiple Garden Patches within the same listing, meaning less work for you.
Flexible use of your space: When listing a Garden Patch, you’ll have the freedom to set rental pricing, availability, and usage terms according to your preferences, allowing for a convenient and adaptable arrangement between you and the Gardener.
Reduced maintenance: By giving up a part of your yard for gardening, you’ll have less lawn to mow and maintain, resulting in decreased workload and more leisure time. It also brings the added bonus of a beautiful garden right in your yard, offering a changing landscape to enjoy throughout the season.
Opportunity to meet new people: Renting out your garden space allows you to meet new people interested in gardening, and lets you foster connections with people you wouldn’t normally meet! Talking to others can help you learn new things and stay curious. And the best part? Even if you’re shy like me, over time, talking with others can make you feel more confident in yourself!
Help your community: Renting out your garden space helps increase your communities’ access to green spaces, which has been linked to various health benefits. Check out our blog post on this topic to learn more about the positive impact of green spaces on health.
Challenges and Considerations of Renting Your Garden Space
Space Requirements: Although you don’t need an expansive field to list your space on our platform, there is a minimum requirement. If you have an area you can park a car on, that’s perfect! You can list between 1-5 Garden Patches per property, and each Cultiville Garden Patch occupies roughly the size of a parking space. It’s crucial to consider how much space you’re willing to allocate for gardening purposes when listing your property.
Less privacy: At Cultiville, we love sharing experiences with others. Sharing your garden is a great way to connect in a way that is fulfilling and exciting! But opening your garden means less privacy in that area during visiting times. If privacy is very important to you, there might be other ways to make passive income that suit your needs better. New garden-sharing responsibilities: When you share your garden, it’s important to talk to your gardeners quickly if there are any problems. Make sure they can use the water (if included) and access the Garden Patch while they’re renting. Be ready to deal with any emergencies during their time in the garden.
Insurance and protection: Having insurance is crucial to safeguard both you and your gardener in case of accidents or damage in the garden. Start by checking if your homeowner’s insurance covers garden rentals. If not, you can request prospective renters to obtain liability insurance for using your land and add you as an “additional insured.” When requesting an insurance policy, ensure you receive proof of insurance that includes your name and specific details about your Garden Patch for full coverage.
Legal compliance and taxes: It’s your responsibility to adhere to local laws and regulations regarding garden rentals, as well as to consider any tax implications related to renting out your garden space. Ensuring legal compliance and understanding tax requirements will help you avoid potential issues and enjoy a smooth rental experience.
